Close to the real thing

A week ago I lamented about the passing of Orange Julius, that great fruity frothy concoction that was sold at Western Plaza back in the day. I've yet to find anything that quite captures that distinctive taste.

But several readers have sent in their recipes, including Carolyn Hicks of Amarillo. Carolyn grew up in Tulia, and remembers going to Amarillo to shop. She also remembers Orange Julius.

"Like you, when I tasted the wonderful Orange Julius, that was the first place I wanted to stop when in Amarillo. The enclosed recipe isn't quite as good as the one you and I remember, but on a hot summer day, it comes pretty close."

The recipe for Orange Julius (serves 2)

3 oz. can frozen orange juice
1/2 cup milk.
1/4 cup sugar or artificial sweetner
1/2 cup water.
1/2 teaspoon vanilla.
6-8 ice cubes.

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Wait 30 seconds. Serve immediately. Enjoy.

I will.
