For what it's worth

I don't think I've ever had quite the response to a column as the one on Wednesday about lack of respect for the office of the presidency from both the left and right.

As of 11 a.m. Thursday, I'd received 48 e-mails. That doesn't count the online postings on amarillo.com. I guessed there might be a lot.

What's surprising is not so much the volume, but the slant of the e-mails. A total of 39 agreed with the stance (81 percent) and 9 (19 percent) did not. And a number of them were of the vein of "I didn't vote for Obama, either, but this is ridiculous..."

It makes me think there's still a huge mostly silent middle that is rational and understanding. And then there's the vocal fringe which has become the symbol of both sides which may not be quite as prevalent as it seems.

I agree with you Jon that the vocal extremists on both ends of the spectrum have, unfortunately, become the representatives of what passes today for "civil" discourse.
