Brandon Meyer

Spc. Brandon Meyer, 20, of Canyon, who was killed in January 2008 in Iraq, will be honored Tuesday with a proclamation and portrait at the State Capital in Austin.

Artist Phil Taylor will present the portrait to Meyer's parents, Terry and Genia Meyer of Canyon, in the main rotunda. Rep. John Smithee and Jack Barnes of Amarillo, president of America Supports You Texas, are scheduled to make remarks in the 25-minute ceremony.

In addition, country singers Jon Christopher Davis and Deryl Dodd will sing the "The Boy I Left Behind." A proclamation honoring Meyer will also be read.

Meyer is being recognized through The American Fallen Soldiers Project. The non-profit organization provides hand painted original portraits to families of those who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Meyer, a Canyon High School graduate, died when the vehicle he was in was struck by a roadside bomb near Mosul, Iraq.
