Come one, come all to Denny's!

There may no such a thing as a free lunch any more (although most sportwriters can spot one a mile away), but there's apparently a free breakfast. At least today.

If you paid attention to the ads between bathroom breaks during the Super Bowl Sunday, Denny's Restaurants was proclaiming a free Grand Slam breakfast from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday nationwide.

The $5.99 breakfast is the Denny's staple -- pancakes, eggs, bacon strips and sausage links. So what's the catch? Is orange juice $7.50? Silverware $5?

It's almost impossible to get a local manager of a national chain to talk to the media, and even on this apparent good news from Denny's, that's no exception. I was referred to the public relations firm of Hill and Knolton, which handles the restaurant.

"No catch," said Christian Schwarz. "Quite frankly, from Denny's point of view, they feel it's time to rekindle the love of breakfast lovers."

Sounds good to me. Hill and Knolton estimates between 1 and 2 million to take advantage of the free breakfast. The giveaway could cost the restaurant chain as much as $9 million.

"I'm sure it will be all hands on deck everywhere," Schwarz said. "Specific restaurants may need to boost their employees. Some have even called in security if there's traffic."

There are two Denny's in Amarillo -- 2116 S. Georgia and 1710 E. Interstate 40 (I-40 and Osage).

After some discrimination charges against Denny's in the past, the restaurant probably figures $9 million worth of PR is worth it.
